Example of a High-Fiber Diet for Irritable Bowel Disease

—Jill Fandrich, PharmD, CRPh

A high-fiber diet can benefit individuals with irritable bowel disease (IBD) as it can help regulate bowel movements, reduce inflammation, and improve overall digestive health. Here are some examples of a high-fiber diet for individuals with IBD:

1. Whole grains - Include whole grains such as oatmeal, brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread in your diet. These are rich in fiber and provide sustained energy without causing digestive discomfort.

2. Fruits and vegetables - Consume a variety of fruits and vegetables daily, as they are excellent sources of dietary fiber. Opt for options such as bananas, berries, oranges, apples, broccoli, spinach, carrots, and Brussels sprouts.

3. Legumes - Incorporate legumes like lentils, chickpeas, black beans, and kidney beans into your meals. These are packed with dietary fiber and can be included in soups or salads or used as a base for vegetarian dishes.

4. Nuts and seeds - Almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds are fiber-rich options that can be added to smoothies or yogurts or sprinkled on top of salads.

5. Psyllium husk - Psyllium husk is a soluble fiber supplement that can be mixed with water or added to smoothies. It helps regulate bowel movements and can be beneficial for individuals experiencing constipation.

6. Water intake - Remember to drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day to ensure proper digestion and to assist the movement of fiber through your digestive system. Aim for at least eight glasses of water daily.

When increasing fiber in your diet, it is recommended to do so gradually, as a sudden increase in fiber intake may cause bloating or gas. It's also important to listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian who can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific needs and condition.

A high-fiber diet is a compass that guides individuals sailing through the stormy seas of irritable bowel disease, providing the nutrients and resilience needed to weather the waves and find relief.
