Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

—Jill Fandrich, PharmD, CRPh

Intermittent fasting has become increasingly popular in recent years as a dietary approach with several potential benefits. Here are some of the key advantages:

1. Weight loss - Intermittent fasting can be an effective tool for weight loss. Restricting the eating window helps create a calorie deficit, leading to reduced overall caloric intake. Additionally, fasting increases the production of human growth hormone (HGH), which can help burn fat and preserve muscle mass.

2. Improved insulin sensitivity - Intermittent fasting can enhance insulin sensitivity, making cells more receptive to insulin and improving blood sugar control. This can especially benefit individuals with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes.

3. Increased autophagy - Fasting stimulates a cellular cleaning process called autophagy, where the body breaks down and recycles damaged cells and proteins. This plays a crucial role in reducing inflammation, promoting cellular health, and potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.

4. Enhanced brain function - Studies suggest intermittent fasting may improve brain health and cognitive function. Fasting induces the release of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which aids in the growth and protection of brain cells. It may also protect against age-related cognitive decline.

5. Reduced inflammation - Chronic inflammation is associated with various health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune conditions. Intermittent fasting has been shown to reduce inflammation markers in the body, which can contribute to overall improved health.

6. Heart health benefits - Intermittent fasting may help lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and other risk factors associated with heart disease. It has also been shown to improve heart health markers like blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity.

7. Simplicity and flexibility - Unlike many other diets, intermittent fasting does not require specific food restrictions or complicated meal plans. It provides flexibility in food choices and allows individuals to eat during their preferred time window, making it easier to sustain long-term.

Although intermittent fasting has many potential benefits, it may not be suitable for everyone. Those with underlying health conditions, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and individuals with a history of eating disorders should consult a healthcare professional before starting any fasting regimen.

Intermittent fasting is a profound reminder that giving our bodies the gift of rest, even from food, has a remarkable ability to rejuvenate and heal.
