Using Natural Products to Build Immunity

—Jill Fandrich, PharmD, CRPh

Natural products can play a significant role in boosting the immune system. Here are some ways in which they can contribute to strengthening the body's BEST natural defense mechanism:

1. Antioxidant properties - Many natural products are rich in antioxidants, which help protect the body's cells from damage caused by harmful free radicals. This can reduce inflammation and support immune function.

2. Vitamins and minerals - Natural products like fruits, vegetables, and herbs are excellent sources of essential vitamins and minerals necessary for proper immune system function. For example, vitamin C found in citrus fruits can strengthen the immune system and improve the body's ability to fight off infections.

3. Anti-inflammatory effects - Chronic inflammation can weaken the immune system over time. Natural products such as turmeric, ginger, and omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish have potent anti-inflammatory properties. By reducing inflammation, these products can enhance immune response.

4. Antimicrobial properties - Some natural products, such as garlic and honey, possess antimicrobial properties, meaning they can help kill or inhibit the growth of harmful microorganisms. This can prevent infections and support the immune system's ability to combat pathogens.

5. Immune-modulating effects - Certain natural products, including medicinal mushrooms like reishi and chaga, have been shown to modulate the immune system's response. They can help stimulate immune cells when needed or reduce excessive immune response in conditions like autoimmune disorders.

6. Stress reduction - Chronic stress can weaken the immune system and make individuals more susceptible to illness. Natural products like chamomile tea, ashwagandha, and lavender have calming properties that can help reduce stress levels, ultimately supporting immune function.

It's important to note that while natural products can benefit immune health, they are not a cure-all. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, adequate sleep, proper hydration, and a balanced diet, alongside natural supplementation products, can positively and synergistically affect immune system function.

Nurture your body's natural immunity and let resilience be the foundation of your well-being.
